Mother’s Day is a perfect day to show your mother how much you love her. Make Mother’s Day special for your mom or other special lady in your life by giving her personalized homemade gifts. A candy wreath is one of these Mother’s Day gifts. Candy Wreaths can also be easy and fun Mother’s Day crafts for kids. They will enjoy working with candy and will be proud to make and give their mom a beautiful and tasty gift.
Note: This Mother's Day candy craft project is only for your personal use. It is copyrighted.
Materials used: one wire coat hanger, Jolly Rancher® hard candy, curling ribbon (red, white, and yellow), wire cutters, pliers, and a pair of scissors.Note: You can buy wire hangers really cheap at a dollar store.
Step 1. Take a wire hanger and bend it into a circle. Do not worry if you do not have a perfect circle. When you attach the candy to it, any unevenness will not be visible.
Step 2. Using wire cutters, cut the top part of the hanger off.
Step 3. There are two ways to make the ring for your wreath.a) Bend one end of the wire into a small loop using pliers. Feed the other end of the wire through the loop, bending it into a circle or loop, which will make a hanger for the wreath.
b) Bend both ends of the wire into small loops using pliers. Hook the loops together; now you have a ring. If you use this method, after attaching the candy to the ring, you will need to tie a loop of narrow ribbon to the top of the wreath forming a hanger.
Note: If the wire hanger is not thick enough, use two wire hangers. Make the first ring. Bend the second hanger into a ring the same size as the first ring; leave some extra length on the wire to form small hooks. Make the small hooks and crimp them to the top of the first ring. Tape the two rings together in several places to hold them together while you are working on the wreath.
Step 4. Prepare wrapped candy and curling ribbon of the corresponding colors.I used Jolly Rancher® hard candy for this wreath. You can use any candy you would like; for example, choose the candy that the recipient loves. The only requirement is that the candy wrappers have “tails”.
Step 5. a) Cut curling ribbon into 8"-10" pieces. Take a piece of candy and tie a piece of curling ribbon around the candy wrapper “tail” using a half “granny knot.”
b) Now tie the candy with a full “granny knot” tightly onto the hanger. This way the candy is really secure onto the wreath.
c) When you tie 15-20 candy pieces to the wire, push them close together to make them more compact. Then continue adding candy to the wreath, stopping once in awhile to push the candy pieces closer together.
d) Cover the whole wire wreath base with candy. Using dull scissors, curl the ends of the curling ribbon on each candy piece. You can curl the ribbon as you attach each candy piece, or you can attach all of the candy first and then curl the ribbons.
Step 6. Take a “Mother’s Day” greeting card; punch a hole in the top of the card. Thread a piece of curling ribbon through the hole in the card and tie the card to the top center of the wreath with curling ribbon. Curl the ends of the ribbon.
